Working principle of generator

Electricity, as a secondary energy source, is the cornerstone of modern society's energy operation. Among them, generators are mechanical devices that convert other forms of energy into electricity. The energy sources of generators are diverse, such as oil, coal, hydropower, etc., but the specific principle of power generation is the same, as follows:

1. Mechanical energy conversion:

The working principle of generators begins with the conversion of other forms of energy (such as wind energy, water energy, or chemical energy from fossil fuels) into mechanical energy. This process typically involves an engine or turbine that converts the kinetic energy of a fluid (such as water or air) or the thermal energy generated by fuel combustion into mechanical rotational energy.

2. Electromagnetic induction:

When the rotor of a generator rotates, it causes the conductive material (usually copper coils) in the rotor to move in the magnetic field generated by the stator. According to Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, when a conductor moves in a magnetic field, an electromotive force (voltage) is generated within the conductor. This movement causes the electrons in the conductor to be subjected to force, resulting in the generation of current in the conductor. If the rotor is a permanent magnet, the magnetic field is fixed, while the conductor (usually in the stator) rotates; If the rotor is an electromagnet, the magnetic field rotates with the rotor while the conductors in the stator remain stationary.

3. Electric energy output:

Once current is generated in the coils of the generator, it can be collected and transmitted through the output terminals of the generator. This current can be alternating current (AC) or converted to direct current (DC) through a rectifier. AC power is the standard output of most generators because it can be easily stepped up or down through transformers to meet different power transmission and usage needs. The electrical energy is then transmitted to the grid or directly supplied to electrical equipment such as homes, industrial equipment, or electric vehicles. The output voltage and frequency of the generator need to match the standards of the power grid to ensure stable power supply and safe operation of the equipment.
